No Boys Allowed: Girlhood and Programming for Girls in 19th and 20th Centuries, United States

WOMEN, GENDER, AND SEXUALITY STUDIES 354

If boys and girls go to school together, why do we find so much sex-segregated extracurricular programming in the United States? Are there benefits? This course seeks to answer these questions by exploring the history of girlhood and girls' programming in the United States in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. We will explore the movement of girls' organizations from developing out of girls' exclusion from boys' clubs to a gradual emphasis on "empowering" girls. A critical examination of gender, sexuality, race and class will inform course discussions. Waitlists controlled by Department; priority given to WGSS majors.
