This class explores the dreams, nightmares, and radical visions of twentieth and twenty-first century feminist science fiction. What happens to sex, gender, and identity when space and time are radically transformed? Is the future a queer feminist utopia, or a nightmare? Will technology liberate us or bring new forms of oppression? What makes science fiction feminist? And is feminism (just) (science) fiction? Taking up these questions, we will read works by Margaret Atwood, Octavia Butler, Joanna Russ, Donna Haraway, Samuel R. Delany, and others.
