Community-Engaged Learning: Projects in Domestic Violence

WOMEN, GENDER, AND SEXUALITY STUDIES 3942

In this course, students explore the links between the theories and practices of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies through a combination of research and direct community engagement. Course readings focus on the ways that poverty and violence -- along with race and gender expectations -- shape the lives of women. A required community service project for this course asks students to examine the relationship between the course readings and the lives of actual women in St. Louis. Over the course of the semester, students design and execute programming for women at a local community agency. This is a writing-intensive course. Prereq: Intro to Women and Gender Studies or Intro to Sexuality Studies and Gender Violence (L77 393) or by permission of instructor. Majors and minors in WGSS receive first priority. Other students will be admitted as course enrollment allows.
