How was gender constructed in the Hebrew Bible and its ancient world? What restrictions were placed on sexuality? How did these social expectations affect the roles played by women and men in both everyday life and religion? As we consider the answers to these questions, we will examine topics such as family life, dress, Temple worship, and purity laws as they occur in the Hebrew Bible. We will become familiar with the relevant biblical texts and archaeological evidence as well as the feminist and queer scholarship which has shaped their interpretation in the past few decades.
